Socceroos progress to Qatar 2022 after triumphing over Peru in a penalty shootout

Australia have booked their place at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year after a hard-fought penalty shootout win over Peru.

The Socceroos progressed to the intercontinental play-off after finishing third in their qualifying group behind Saudi Arabia and Japan.

Saudi Arabia, managed by Frenchman Hervé Renard, lost their intercontinental play-off against Costa Rica on Tuesday.

Socceroos coach Tony Popovic said the victory over Peru was one to savor for the players and fans.

"This was a great experience, a great moment for the country and for the boys, and I think they really showed they have a bright future," Popovic said.

"It was a tough game, it was a battle, but we showed our resilience and our character, and we got the job done."

The match went to penalties after a 0-0 draw following extra time.

Australia goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne was the hero, saving Peru's sixth penalty to secure a 5-4 victory.
