Bird seven-for sinks South Australia as New South Wales dominate day one
South Australia were humbled by a rampant New South Wales on day one of the Sheffield Shield clash at the SCG, with Test hopeful Matt Renshaw falling cheaply and seamer Harry Conway taking seven wickets.
Debutant Jack Edwards made 24 not out from 31 balls in his first game for the Blues before the visitors were bowled out for 135 in 32.2 overs, with only Jake Carder (37) and Nathan McSweeney (26) reaching 20.
NSW were 0 for 20 at stumps in reply after rushing to the crease for a quick 11-over burst late in the day, with Daniel Hughes unbeaten on 13 and Kurtis Patterson on 7.
After winning the toss and bowling first, NSW took just 11 balls to strike when Conway had opener Henry Hunt caught behind for 11.
Renshaw, who is expected to be recalled to the Test team for the upcoming tour of India, then fell the same way to Conway for 2 in a major blow to the visitors.
Conway continued to torment the SA batsmen, bowling McSweeney to make it 3 for 24 and then having Carder caught at slip to reduce the visitors to 4 for 38.
Liam Scott (11) and Alex Carey (13) added 23 for the fifth wicket before both fell to Conway, who finished with figures of 7 for 48.
Wes Agar (12) and Ben Manenti (10) added a further 22 for the seventh wicket before Josh Hazlewood had both batsmen caught behind in quick succession.
Edwards then wrapped up the innings by having Harry Nielsen caught at gully to dismiss the last man for 135.
NSW then raced to 0 for 20 in their reply, with Hughes hitting four boundaries in his unbeaten 13.
The Blues will resume their innings on day two at 0 for 20, still needing 116 runs to avoid the follow-on.
