Desmond Claude Scores 26 Points in USC’s Win Over Texas Arlington
Claude’s Big Night Leads Trojans to Victory
Southern California guard Desmond Claude had a career-high 26 points as the Trojans defeated Texas Arlington 84-69 on Tuesday night at the Galen Center.
Claude, a junior college transfer, made 10 of 15 shots from the field, including 4 of 7 from three-point range. He also added 5 rebounds and 4 assists.
The Trojans (2-0) led by just 5 points at halftime, but they pulled away in the second half thanks to Claude’s hot shooting.
Claude’s performance was a welcome sight for the Trojans, who were without leading scorer Boogie Ellis, who is out with a foot injury.
In addition to Claude’s big night, the Trojans also got solid contributions from Drew Peterson (15 points), Kobe Johnson (14 points), and Harrison Hornery (12 points).
The Mavericks (1-1) were led by David Azore, who scored 20 points. UTA shot just 38.5% from the field, including 25% from three-point range.
The Trojans will be back in action on Friday night when they host Pepperdine at the Galen Center.
Claude Continues to Impress
Claude’s performance against Texas Arlington was his second straight strong outing.
In the Trojans’ season-opening win over Florida Gulf Coast, Claude scored 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field.
Claude is averaging 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game this season.
He is shooting 56.3% from the field, 46.7% from three-point range, and 80.0% from the free throw line.
Claude’s emergence has been a big boost for the Trojans, who are looking to replace the production of Evan Mobley and Isaiah Mobley, who both left for the NBA after last season.
Trojans Look to Build on Strong Start
The Trojans are off to a 2-0 start this season, and they have a chance to build on that success with a home game against Pepperdine on Friday night.
Pepperdine is 1-1 this season, but they have a talented team led by guard Houston Mallette.
The Trojans will need to play well defensively to slow down Mallette and the rest of the Pepperdine offense.
If the Trojans can get another strong performance from Claude, they should be in good shape to win their third straight game.
