Jackson Bird Back in the Wickets For New South Wales in Sheffield Shield

Bird took 3-46 as New South Wales defeated South Australia by an innings and 12 runs

Jackson Bird is back among the wickets for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield, taking 3-46 as the Blues defeated South Australia by an innings and 12 runs at the SCG.

Bird, who has not played a Test match since 2019, was recalled to the New South Wales side after a strong performance for Australia A against Sri Lanka. He repaid the faith of the selectors with a typically miserly performance, bowling 22 overs and conceding just 46 runs.

Bird's wickets included the key scalp of South Australia captain Travis Head, who was caught behind for 32. He also dismissed Jake Lehmann (20) and Nathan McAndrew (10) as South Australia were bowled out for 221 in their second innings.

The match was a tough one for the young South Australia side, who were outplayed by a more experienced New South Wales team. New South Wales won the toss and elected to bat, and made 345 in their first innings, with Daniel Hughes (127) and Peter Nevill (103) scoring centuries.

In reply, South Australia were bowled out for 148, with only Jake Weatherald (51) offering any resistance. New South Wales then enforced the follow-on, and South Australia were again bowled out for 221, with only Head and Lehmann offering any resistance.

The win was New South Wales' second in the Sheffield Shield this season, and they now sit third on the table. South Australia remain winless after three matches.
