Lakers News: Jaxson Hayes Discusses Having to Step Up With Anthony Davis Out
Jaxson Hayes is ready to take on a bigger role with the Los Angeles Lakers after Anthony Davis was ruled out for four weeks with a right foot injury.
Davis suffered the injury in the Lakers' 101-95 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. He left the game in the third quarter and did not return.
After the game, Hayes said he is confident that he can step up and fill the void left by Davis.
"I'm ready to do whatever it takes to help this team win," Hayes said. "I've been working hard all summer and I'm confident in my abilities."
Hayes, 21, averaged 9.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game last season. He started 42 games for the Lakers and was one of their most consistent players.
With Davis out, Hayes is expected to start at center for the Lakers. He will be counted on to provide scoring and rebounding, and he will also need to be a defensive presence in the paint.
"I know it's going to be a challenge, but I'm up for it," Hayes said. "I'm going to give it my all every night and I'm confident that we can still be a successful team without AD."
The Lakers are scheduled to open the regular season on Oct. 19 against the Golden State Warriors.
