The Penguins got off to a fast start, scoring twice in the first period. Crosby opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 6:44, and Jake Guentzel made it 2-0 just over two minutes later. The Capitals cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal by Alex Ovechkin at 16:44, but Crosby restored the two-goal lead with his second goal of the night at 19:19.
The Penguins extended their lead to 4-1 in the second period on a goal by Bryan Rust at 10:08. The Capitals got one back on a goal by Evgeny Kuznetsov at 15:26, but the Penguins held on for the 5-2 win.
