Mean Green Hold Off Golden Gophers Late for Impressive Victory
Denton, TX -
The North Texas Mean Green improved to 3-0 on the young season with a hard-fought 54-51 victory over the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday afternoon at Apogee Stadium.
North Texas led for the majority of the game, but Minnesota kept things close throughout. The Golden Gophers had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but their potential game-tying field goal attempt was blocked by North Texas' defensive line.
The Mean Green were led by running back Ayo Adeyi, who rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. Quarterback Austin Aune completed 18 of 27 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 41 yards.
Minnesota was led by quarterback Tanner Morgan, who completed 22 of 34 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown. Running back Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
The Mean Green defense came up with several big plays throughout the game, including two interceptions and a fumble recovery. North Texas also sacked Morgan four times.
The victory is a big one for North Texas, as it marks the program's first 3-0 start since 2017. The Mean Green will now look to continue their winning ways next Saturday when they travel to face the SMU Mustangs.
