Qantas Boeing 747 in-flight mid-air engine failure

On 23 January 2023, Qantas flight QF520, a Boeing 747-400, experienced an in-flight engine failure shortly after takeoff from Singapore Changi Airport. The aircraft was scheduled to operate a flight to Perth, Western Australia.
The aircraft departed Singapore at 10:09pm local time (GMT+8). Approximately 30 minutes into the flight, the aircraft's left-hand engine experienced a failure. The aircraft's crew immediately followed emergency procedures, shutting down the affected engine and returning to Singapore.
QF520 landed safely back at Singapore Changi Airport at 11:19pm local time. All 365 passengers and 19 crew members on board the aircraft were safe and well. Engineers are currently inspecting the aircraft to determine the cause of the engine failure.
Qantas has released the following statement on the incident: "We are aware of an incident involving a Qantas Boeing 747-400 aircraft, flight number QF520, which experienced an engine failure shortly after takeoff from Singapore Changi Airport. The aircraft returned to Singapore and landed safely. All passengers and crew are safe and well. We are working with the relevant authorities to investigate the incident. We will provide further updates as they become available."
The incident is being investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB). The ATSB is Australia's independent transport safety investigator. The ATSB will investigate the circumstances of the incident and make recommendations to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
