Toril Eyes Champions Quarter Finals: "It Could Be Historic"

Elche, España

Elche CF Head Coach Francisco Rodríguez Toril has declared that his team can make history by reaching the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Elche’s fairy tale European run

Elche, a modest club from southeastern Spain, has defied all odds to advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first time in their history.

After topping their group ahead of European giants Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Viktoria Plzen, Elche were drawn against last season's runners-up, Liverpool.

In the first leg of their last-16 tie, Elche held Liverpool to a creditable 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Speaking ahead of the second leg at the Estadio Martínez Valero on Tuesday, Toril said he believes his team can create history by reaching the last eight.

"We know it will be a very difficult task, but we believe we can do it," Toril said. "We have a great team spirit, and we are playing with a lot of confidence." Elche will need to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg if they are to progress, but Toril is confident that his team can do it. "We have to play the perfect game," he said. "We need to be disciplined, and we need to take our chances. But I believe we can do it. It could be a historic moment for this club."

Liverpool wary of Elche threat

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has warned his players not to underestimate Elche. "They are a very good team, and they have already shown what they are capable of in this competition," Klopp said. "We will need to be at our best if we are to beat them." Elche will be without their suspended captain Pere Milla, but Toril is confident that his team can cope without him. "We have a good squad, and we have players who can come in and do a job," Toril said. "We are confident we can get a result." The second leg of the tie between Elche and Liverpool will be played at the Estadio Martínez Valero on Tuesday, March 14, at 9pm CET.
