Winnipeg hospital under fire after patient's leg amputated without consent

Family alleges Grace Hospital staff failed to get consent before surgery

Southern Chiefs' Organization calls for investigation into 'egregious' incident

A Winnipeg hospital is under fire after a patient's leg was amputated without their consent.

The patient, a First Nations woman in her 40s, was admitted to Grace Hospital in May 2022 with a foot infection she said she was told put her at risk of sepsis.

The woman has accused hospital staff of failing to get her consent before amputating her left leg below the knee.

The woman's family has filed a complaint with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) and the Southern Chiefs' Organization (SCO) is calling for an investigation into the "egregious" incident.

The WRHA has apologized for the "unacceptable" incident and said it is investigating.

The SCO has called for a public inquiry into the incident, saying it is a "symptom of a broader systemic problem" in the health care system.

The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of Indigenous patients in the health care system.

The SCO has said that the incident is a "stark reminder of the systemic racism and discrimination that Indigenous peoples face in the health care system."

The WRHA has said that it is committed to providing culturally safe care to all patients.

The incident is still under investigation.
