Los Angeles Lakers Acquire D'Angelo Russell, Jonas Valančiūnas, and Brook Lopez in Three-Team Trade
Lakers Shake Up Roster to Bolster Playoff Hopes
The Los Angeles Lakers have made a blockbuster trade, acquiring three-time All-Star point guard D'Angelo Russell, two-time All-Star center Jonas Valančiūnas, and veteran center Brook Lopez in a three-team deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Utah Jazz.
Russell Expected to Fill Lakers' Point Guard Void
Russell, 27, is a dynamic scorer and playmaker who has averaged 20.1 points and 6.3 assists per game over his career. He is expected to take over as the Lakers' starting point guard, filling a void that has plagued the team since the departure of Lonzo Ball.
Russell's ability to create his own shot and set up teammates will be a major asset to the Lakers, who have struggled to find consistency at the point guard position.
Valančiūnas and Lopez Bolster Lakers' Frontcourt
Valančiūnas, 31, is a physical presence in the paint, averaging 18.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game last season. He is a skilled scorer and rebounder who will provide the Lakers with a much-needed boost to their interior defense.
Lopez, 35, is a three-time All-Star and an experienced veteran. He is a reliable defender and a solid scorer, averaging 13.3 points per game last season. He will provide the Lakers with depth and experience in the frontcourt.
Lakers Sacrifice Future Assets
In order to acquire Russell, Valančiūnas, and Lopez, the Lakers had to give up some future assets. They traded away their 2027 first-round pick, their 2029 first-round pick, and their 2023 second-round pick.
The Lakers also sent guard Malik Beasley and forward Jarred Vanderbilt to the Utah Jazz as part of the deal.
Lakers Aim for Title Contention
With the acquisition of Russell, Valančiūnas, and Lopez, the Lakers have significantly improved their roster and are now considered a contender in the Western Conference.
The Lakers have struggled in recent years, but the addition of these three players gives them a chance to compete for their 18th NBA championship.
