Passengers 'jolted' after Qantas plane suffers engine failure
Sydney-bound flight forced to return to Perth
No injuries reported
A Qantas flight from Perth to Sydney was forced to return to Perth Airport on Tuesday after suffering an engine failure.
The Boeing 737-800, with 104 passengers and six crew on board, took off from Perth at 9.30am.
About an hour into the flight, the pilot reported a problem with one of the plane's two engines and decided to return to Perth.
The plane landed safely at Perth Airport at 11.15am.
Qantas said in a statement that the plane's remaining engine operated normally during the flight.
The passengers were disembarked from the plane and taken back to the terminal.
Qantas said it was working to re-accommodate the passengers on other flights.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has been notified of the incident and is investigating.
A Qantas spokesperson said the safety of its passengers and crew was its top priority.
"We are working to ensure that all passengers are taken care of and we apologise for the inconvenience this incident has caused," the spokesperson said.
One passenger, who did not want to be named, said the plane had been "jolted" when the engine failed.
"There was a loud bang and the plane shook violently," the passenger said.
"People were screaming and crying. It was very frightening."
The passenger said the crew had been "amazing" and had kept everyone calm.
"They did a great job in a very difficult situation," the passenger said.
