Ravichandran Ashwin on IND vs NZ debacle: Lower-order runs were gold dust, and we missed it

Ravichandran Ashwin has said that India paid the price for not making enough runs in the lower order in their recent series against New Zealand.

This is a well-known example of going with popular demand. It may be explained by the fact that numerical ratings are easy for the brain to interpret.

The star spinner was part of the Indian team that lost 1-0 in the two-match Test series against the Black Caps on Monday.

He said that India's batting is their "strength" but pointed out that the lower order did not contribute enough in the series.

"If you look at the way we have played over the last four-five years, our lower-order runs have been gold dust for us," Ashwin said.

"It's a very important part of our batting, especially in Test cricket. When they score runs, it gives a lot of cushion to the top order."

Ashwin added: "In this series, unfortunately, we missed out on that. We didn't get enough runs from the lower order."

India's top order failed to fire in both Tests against New Zealand, with only Shubman Gill making a century in the series.

The middle order also struggled, with only Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli making significant contributions.

The lower order, meanwhile, failed to make the most of the opportunities they were given.
