India took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series with a dominant performance in Indore
Ravichandran Ashwin spun India to victory over New Zealand in the first Test in Indore, taking six wickets as the hosts won by an innings and 132 runs.
Ashwin finished with figures of 6-82 as New Zealand were bowled out for 162 in their second innings, with only Tom Latham (52) and Daryl Mitchell (44) offering any resistance.
India had earlier declared on 325-8, with Shubman Gill (112) and Cheteshwar Pujara (62) hitting half-centuries.
The victory gives India a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, with the second Test to be played in Mumbai from December 3-7.
Ashwin was the star of the show for India, taking 12 wickets in the match to continue his fine record in home Tests.
The 36-year-old off-spinner now has 449 Test wickets, moving him up to eighth on the all-time list, above New Zealand's Richard Hadlee.
Ashwin was ably supported by fellow spinner Axar Patel, who took 4-68 in the second innings, while Mohammed Shami took 3-39.
New Zealand were always chasing the game after being bowled out for 101 in their first innings, with only Latham (35) and Mitchell (31) making it into double figures.
India's bowlers then took control in the second innings, with Ashwin and Patel sharing the wickets to dismiss New Zealand for 162.
The victory was India's first in a home Test since beating Australia in March 2023, and will give them confidence ahead of the second Test in Mumbai.
