Rostock Reaches DFB Cup Quarterfinals with Home Win
Regional Third Division Team Upsets Higher Ranked Opponent
Rostock's Cinderella Run Continues
In a stunning upset, third-division side FC Hansa Rostock defeated second-division Karlsruher SC 2-1 in the Round of 16 of the DFB Cup on Tuesday night, advancing to the quarterfinals for the first time in the club's history.
Rostock, who currently sit in the relegation zone of the 3. Liga, took an early lead through a header from Kevin Schumacher in the 15th minute. Karlsruhe equalized in the 33rd minute through a penalty converted by Fabian Schleusener, but Rostock regained the lead just before halftime through a stunning free kick from Hanno Behrens.
Rostock held on to their lead in the second half, despite Karlsruhe's best efforts to find an equalizer. The win marks a remarkable achievement for the third-division side, who have now knocked out two second-division teams in this year's DFB Cup. Rostock will now face either Borussia Dortmund or VfL Bochum in the quarterfinals, which will be played on March 4th and 5th.
